The Morro Bay Aquarium was built in 1960 and is family-owned by Dean and Bertha Tyler.
The Morro Bay Aquarium became a rehabilitation center for distressed mammals in 1984 and is a non-profit organization.
The Morro Bay Aquarium It features three sea lions and a harbor seal that are housed here and were brought in because of their injuries or abandonment. Feeding the sea lions is fun for both children and adults.
The aquarium is also a member of I.M.A.T.A (International Marine Animals Training Association) . I.M.A.T.A. meets annually and shares the latest research and development in mammal handling.
Dean and Bertha Tyler were the first to raise an orphaned sea otter to adulthood. The otter, named Berdie, lived at the aquarium for ten years. The techniques the Tylers used to help Berdie have been shared and used to help many otters.
Fourteen tanks line the inside of the building, allowing you to view local marine life such as fish, sharks, octopus, eels, abalone sea anemones and more. In addition, the research department at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo boards their horseshoe crabs here.
The Aquarium is educational, interesting and fun! We are open every day of the year.
