Floracliff Nature Sanctuary was started in 1989 and dedicated as a Kentucky State Nature Preserve on March 15, 1996, the first in Fayette County. It is organized as a non-profit private foundation and managed by an independent board of directors in conjunction with the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission. Although the sanctuary is open by appointment only, it offers a variety of walks, volunteer events, research opportunities and hands-on workshops to interested individuals and groups.
The Mission of Floracliff's board of directors is to care for the sanctuary property, ensure its protection as a nature preserve and promote public education of the natural history of the Inner Bluegrass region. In its stewardship, the directors are guided by principles laid down by Floracliff's founder, Dr. Mary Wharton.
In Our Vision, Floracliff's uplands and gorges are a prime example of the Inner Bluegrass watershed of the Kentucky River. Its land and native flora and fauna will be a living model and inspiration for promoting understanding and appreciation of the region's ecology, landscape and cultural heritage.
We Invite you to enjoy this web site, to visit and appreciate Floracliff's treasures and to help realize and support its contributions to Central Kentucky's environment and citizens.
