(Youth Staged Reading) Young Gifted and Black by Lorraine Hansberry:

A long-running success of the 1968/69 Off-Broadway season, To Be Young, Gifted and Black is a fast-paced, powerful, and touching production that captures the world of Lorraine Hansberry. Adapted by her ex-husband Robert Nemiroff after her death, it is a compilation of her works, including autobiographical sketches, diary entries, letters, and excerpts from her plays and essays.

This kaleidoscope of shifting scenes, moods, and images uniquely weaves through her life experiences and the times that shaped her, with actors transitioning through various challenging roles, culminating in her ultimate confrontation with cancer. Featuring scenes from her plays and personal reminiscences, the production provides a deeply personal look into her thoughts and experiences as a black woman in America, addressing social and political issues, racial identity, and the struggles and triumphs of being young, gifted, and black. It stands as a powerful testament to Hansberry's life and a major statement on the American Black experience.
