Run, Lola, Run. [Germany] (1999/2024) (81 mins)

On the 25 th anniversary of its release, Sony Pictures Classics has released a restored version of this hi-tech thriller, innovative for its time when first released in 1999. The movie was an instant hit among fans and critics for its storytelling, direction and performances. The movie became one of the highest-grossing non-English-language films ever at that time in the US and Canada. The story follows Lola, an athlete who needs to obtain 100,000 Deutschmarks in twenty minutes to save the life of her boyfriend Manni, who is in trouble with the local gangsters. Director Tom Tywker films the drama in the form of a video game, quite an experimental filmmaking technique at the time. Film reviewer Jarred Jones writes that Run, Lola, Run is “an all-too-rare example of the viewer experiencing reality unfold without commentary from the central character. Run Lola Run digs into our memory by playing with it. It tests our attention to detail because its protagonist is concerned only with the things most important to her: money, time, and love.”

All films will be screened at Dare Arts in Manteo, unless otherwise specified. Doors will open at 6pm and films will start at 6:30pm. Discussion follows the screening.
