12:30 pm - Getting Started: Identifying Your Writing Instincts to Write Your Novel, Memoir, or Poetry Collection-in-Progress
Presented by Adelia Gregory in the Reading Room

Teaching artist Adelia Gregory will lead a forty-five-minute writing workshop entitled “Getting Started: Identifying Your Writing Instincts to Write Your Novel, Memoir, or Poetry Collection-in-Progress,” aimed at engaging beginning and intermediate writers alike. The workshop will start with a succinct overview of writer’s block and some of the key reasons why it happens. Participants will receive a handout with three prompts adapted from a workshop with award-winning creative nonfiction writer Melissa Febos, a list of narrative techniques for the three genres discussed, and a few one-to-two-page follow-up readings. Adelia will guide participants through the three prompts and provide opportunities to share. Writers will walk away with an idea of their first and second instincts and may find it helpful to adapt exercises into longer scenes for their books.

1:30 pm - The Tips of the Trade - Author Panel
Presented in the Reading Room

The Deep Valley Book Festival welcomes back four past keynote authors for a special author panel. Here's your chance to have your literary questions answered by these bestselling Minnesota authors. This discussion will uncover each author's personal route to publication as well as tips of the trades in various areas of literary perspectives ranging from humor and suspense to children's literature.
